Dal Lake
A famous lake in Srinagar is the Dal Lake connected to a number of other lakes of the Kashmir valley. About 500 Victorian-era wooden houseboats for which the lake is known. Covering 18 square kilometers the lake is divided into four basins Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Bod Dal and Nagin. An island each in the centre, known as Rup Lank (or Char Chinari) and Sona Lank are present in the part of lake Lokut-dal and Bod-dal respectively. The lake sometimes freezes over during the winter season. Interesting flora and fauna is found in and around the lake. Lotus flower, water lillies and water chestnuts are main flora in lake. Notable birds are kingfishers and heron. The Lake and Waterways Dal Authority allows kayaking, canoeing, water surfing and licensed angling on the lake apart from the houseboats.
Hazratbal Shrine
The Hazratbal Shrine is a Muslim shrine in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, India. It contains a relic believed by many Muslims of India to be a hair of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The name of the shrine comes from the Arabic word Hazrat, meaning holy or majestic, and the Kashmiri word bal, meaning place. The shrine is situated on the left bank of the Dal Lake, Srinagar and is considered to be Kashmir's holiest Muslim shrine. [2] The Moi-e-Muqqadas (the sacred hair) of Mohammed is believed to be preserved here. The shrine is known by many names including Hazratbal, Assar-e-Sharief, Madinat-us-Sani, or simply Dargah Sharif.
Jama Masjid Mosque
Built by Sultan Sikandar in 1400 AD Jama Masjid Mosque is an important mosque in Srinagar located Nowhatta, in the middle of the old city. Later, the mosque extended by the son of Sultan Sikandar, Zain-ul-Abidin. Beautiful Indo-Saracenic architecture of the masjid is one of the main attractions of the Mosque. A magnificent courtyard, 370 wooden pillars, the peace and tranquility inside is the attractive feature of the mosque. Every Friday thousands of Muslims assemble at the mosque to offer their prayers.
Khanqah-e-Molla
Khanqah-e-Molla Located on the banks of the river Jhelum, Khanqah-e-Molla or Shah-e-Hamdan is one of the oldest Muslim shrines and an important religious destination in Srinagar. Built in 1395, the shrine was later reconstructed in 1732. Inspiration from Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic styles Khanqah-e-Molla is an excellent example of wood architecture that draws may tourist to the place. In memory of Sufi saint Mir Syed Ali Hamdan, Sultan Sikander constructed Khanqah-e-Molla.
Shankaracharya Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Shankracharya Mandir of Kashmir is the oldest shrine in the Kashmir valley. The temple is also known as Jyesteshwara temple. Located on Gopadari Hill in the south-east of Srinagar, the history of the temple dates back around 4th centaury. Built by Raja Gopadatya in 371 BC, after the name of the King the temple was named as 'Gopadari'. Shankracharya, the great philosopher, spent his time during his trip to Kashmir was the belief. In the shape of a circular chamber the main shrine provides a breathtaking view of the valley. The ceiling of the main chamber appears to be modern in the approach after numerous repairs. This temple is situated at a height of 1100 feet above the Srinagar city .
Wular Lake
The largest freshwater lake in India and in Asia is the lake Wular. The lake ranks prominent as one of the major tourist attractions in Srinagar. To the northwest of Srinagar City about 32 km Wular Lake is located in scenic locales. Reflecting the beauty of nature at its best the lake attracts number of tourist. Wular is surrounded by high mountains on the north and north-east of the valley, which enhances the scenic charm of the locales. Wular Lake is about 16 km long and 10 km wide, spreading over an area of about 125 sq. km. Wular acts as a natural flood reservoir, drawing off excess water from the Jhelum River, which leaves the lake at Sopore. The lake changes character with every few miles of its course.
