Kullu or Kulanthpitha Valley
Kullu or Kulanthpitha a veritable heaven on earth on the banks of the Beas River in the Kullu Valley, located in between Dhauladhar Ranges and Pir Pamjal Ranges of Indian Himalaya, Kullu is one of the famous holiday destinations of Himachal Pradesh. It has an average elevation of 1,362 meters (4,469 feet). Here is the core of an intricate web of numerous valleys - each of which is a visual delight and seems more beautiful than the other.
A broad mountainous ridge having the village-temples of Bijli Mahadev, Mount Nag and Pueed are present to the east of Kullu. On the South of Kullu lie towns of Bhuntar and Mandi. To the north lies the famous town of Manali, which through the Rohtang pass leads onto the Lahaul and Spiti Valley.
Kullu is the most favorite mountain destination of tourist from all across India. Blessed with some of the most spectacular and beautiful landscapes anywhere, it is a travellers paradise -lofty snow peaks, deep gorges, lush green valleys, fast flowing rivers, enchanting mountain lakes, flower bedecked meadows, beautiful temples and monasteries steeped in time.
Kullu is home to festivals and celebrations on a grand and colorful note, which are carried on by people of Malani Tribe. Festivals of the order of Malani, Phalguni, Shahri Jatra and Birshu are carried on with great gusto and fanfare in the Kullu valley, a prominent Hill Station in India. Also known as the "Valley of Gods", is well known for the seven day festival of Dussehra, a celebration of the mythical Lord Rama's victory over the evil king Ravana. The festival takes place in the months of October or November depending upon the Hindu calendar.
The Raghunath Temple, built in 1660 in honor of the valley's patron deity, Lord Ram. In the spring Kullu is at its most colourful with pink blossoms and white flowers while the higher slopes are aglow with gorgeous rhododendrons. In winter the hillsides are flanked in white. The valley has some of the best sites for skiing (at Solang), para-gliding, mountaineering, white-water rafting, trekking, biking, etc.
The name Manali was derived by Manavalaya, the abode of Manu. Manali is an important Himalayan hill station of northern India which is famous for its superb beauty of nature, cool & pleasant ambiance, adventure sports and amazing tourist attractions. Manali is surrounded by fruit orchards, deodar and pine forests, hot water springs, mineral springs, splendid mountains, caves and temples. Experience the local color and beauty in Kullu-Manali's temples, quaint villages and the vibrant and festive mood of the people and their colorful clothes and handicrafts. The mighty Beas hurtles through the town, carving a deep gorge in its wake. The landscape here is breath taking. It is an excellent place for a holiday, a favorite resort for trekkers and also know as the SWITZERLAND OF INDIA.
It has a flourishing orchard industry, a popular honeymoon destination and trailhead for numerous treks as well as a great countryside ideal for adventure sport lovers. Each trek presents a spectacular sight of nature. Thus, Manali is an ideal place for those in search of both comfort and adventure. This picturesque town of Kullu is located on the western Himalayas, at the altitude of 1,219m. The town of Kullu is set along the banks of river Beas. The striking feature of this town is its green meadows and panoramic views.
Climate of Kullu Manali: Pleasant climates throughout the year as summers are mild with temperatures in the range of 20-25 degrees and winters are very cold below freezing point. The best time to visit the hill station is the period between April and October.
To reach Kullu-Manali
By road
A network of road connects Kullu to major parts of the country. Delhi is 522km away from valley of the god. Ambala, Chandigarh, Ropar, Kiratpur, Bilaspur and Mandi are the main stations on the way.
By air
An 18 seater (Dornier) aircraft is the only aircraft that is able to land in Kullu-Manali Airport at Bhuntar, which is at a distance of 10 km from Kullu town.
By rail
Jogindernagar (125 km), Pathankot (285km), Simla narrow gauge (270km from Kullu), Chandigarh (267km) and Kalka are some of the closest railway terminals to Kullu Manali.
