Khandala & Lonavala Hills
Khandala and Lonavala are the twin hill stations of Maharashtra. These two twin hill station are just five kms away from each other located on the west sides of the Sahyadris, spanning up to the Mumbai-Pune highway at an altitude of 625 meters. Both Lonavala and Khandala were built by British in 1811. Surrounded by thick forests and dense canopied trees, Khandala and Lonavala both offer some spectacular views of gushing waterfalls. Khandala is just 5kms far from Lonavala.
Lonavala and Khandala have become famous because of nature's gift. Both the hill stations which dazzles the visitors with its spectacular scenery, verdant hills, deep green valleys, beautiful lakes and waterfall. Khandala is very popular as health resorts and visited by numerous tourists from all across the world through out the year. The hill stations are known for their scenic beauty, green hills, deep valleys, historic forts, lakes and waterfalls. There are a number of sanatoria dotting the hills in both towns.
The natural splendor, combined with peaceful surroundings, makes the hill station the perfect holiday spot. The steep valley on its one side and the high hills on the other, make the landscape simply wonderful. The lush greenery of the mountains especially during the monsoons and the misty paths attract tourist like honeybees here. The silver waterfalls amidst the lush greenery are extremely magical. Lonavala and Khandala both offer scenic views of the hills surrounding them.
Situated at an altitude of 625 m, this quiet hills town is a weekend escape for residents of Mumbai and Pune. Lonavala and Khandala are the perfect places to unwind from the hectic schedule of daily life. The most striking and magnetic feature of the hill stations is its scenic beauty. There are a number of points in Khandala, which provide the panoramic view of the valley, woods and the mountain terrain. There are a number of waterfalls and lakes originating from the hills, which add to the magnificence of the place. A treat for the senses, these water bodies provide respite, by the virtue of their pristine waters and tranquil locations. From forts to caves to lakes, the region is filled with adventure. Summers extend from April to June and are mild. November to February are the winter months. The weather is cool during the period.
The hill resort formed part of the territory of the great Maratha leader Chattrapati Shivaji, who is credited with organizing the Maratha into a military power.
The climatic condition is ideal for a holiday with temperature rising to maximum 12 C during winter. During the summer season, temperature rises to as high as 36 C. October to May months are the best time to go to these hill resorts. It is advised not to visit Khandala in the monsoon season between the months of June and September because of heavy rains. in the western part of the western state of Maharashtra, India Khandala is nestled in the Sahyadri hills. Situated 101 km southeast of Mumbai and 69 km from Pune, the hill resort is 5 km from Lonavala.
Lonavala and Khandala is not directly connected by Air but it is well connected by Rail and Road links.
