| Royal Museum |
| Among many architectural marvels of the Tanjavur city the Thanjavur palace is one of them and was partly built by the Nayaks and partly by the Marathas around 1550 AD. A massive structure with huge halls, wide corridors, observation towers and a shady courtyard the palace architectural wonder. A library, an art gallery and a museum are housed in the palace. Items from the past rulers are displayed in the Royal museum. Items like royal clothing, headgears and hunting weapons are some that draw the attention of visitors. The two Durbar halls, where the rulers held public meetings, are in good shape. A superb collection of artifacts of the 8th and 9th century, belonging to the Chola dynasty are housed in the Art Gallery. The greatness of the craftsmanship during those days can be eye witness and proved by bronze and granite statues. Next to the art gallery stands the Saraswathi Mahal Library has an amazing collection of manuscripts written on palm leaves and paper. |
