Bharat Temple
Oldest temple in Rishikesh built by Adiguru Shankaracharya in 12th century Bharat mandir dedicated to Bharat, younger brother of Lord Ram. Bharat mandir is situated in the old town near Triveni Ghat. Tamur during his invasion in 1398 destroyed the original temple. Many important things are well preserved till date in the temple premises. An idol of Lord Vishnu carved out of a single Saligram (the divine stone of Mahavishnu) is present in the inner sanctum of the temple. The rich history of the temple is revealed in the recent excavations. In the premises of the temple old statues, coins, pots and other things have been discovered.
Chila
Twenty kilometres from Rishikesh is Chila, covered by thick forests. A reservoir here is fed by River Ganga near which one can see many animals. Chila has been declared as a wildlife sanctuary by government.
Gita Bhavan
Gita bhawan famous for depicted walls is one of the oldest temple complex in the area. The famous Gita Ashram set up in 1950's is famous for its paintings, statues, scenes from the epics Mahabharata and Ramayana adorn on the ashram walls. Many more facilities like free ayurvedic dispensary, a branch of Gita press Gorakhpur where one can buy bedsheets, cotton sarees from here. In the ashram Pravachans, keertans are a regular affair, and in the evenings one can enjoy bhakti sangeet here. Accommodation for pilgrims the complex also has some hundred rooms.
Kunjapuri Temple
Kunjapuri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and sits atop an almost perfectly conical hill about 2000 ft in Kunjapuri. Kunjapuri commands a beautiful view of the snow-ranges of the Himalayas and of the valley of the Bhagirathi.
Lakshman Jhula
A prime tourists attraction in Rishikesh, Lakshman Jhula is a landmark. Especially the view of the high current of the river from the bridge is incomparable. Spectacular surroundings and the cool breeze from the River all these together make Lakshman Jhula a great place to visit. The bridge appears more gorgeous and stunning if the view is taken from the boat in the middle of the river. The current bridge was built in 1939 AD. Sunset view from this place in winters is a excellent option.
Narendra Nagar
It is a historical town15 kilometres from Rishikesh which was set up by King of Tehri, Narendra Singh. It has a sfew archaeological structures, the most notable being the Royal Palace.
Nilkanth Mahadeo Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is located on a hill above Swarg Ashram in Haridwar. According to the mythological stories, Lord Shiva drank the poison that appeared from the 'Sagar Manthan' (churning of ocean). On drinking the poison, his throat turned blue and from that time onwards, Lord Shiva came to be known as 'Neelkantha'.
Fairs are held every year in the months of monsoon - mid July to August. The temple observes two fairs that held annually on the occasion of Shivratri (Feb-Mar) and Shivratri of Shravan (July-Aug). People take bath in fresh water spring within temple complex before paying a visit to the temple.
