Pilgrims - Mathura - Uttar Pradesh
Birthplace of Lord Krishna - Mathura
Mathura is a holy city in Uttar Pradesh and the birthplace of Krishna at the centre called Krishnajanmabhoomi. The Keshav Dev temple was built in ancient times on the site of Krishna's legendary birthplace. Mathura was the capital of the Surasena Kingdom, ruled by Kansa the uncle of Krishna as per epic Mahabharata and per Bhagavata Purana. It is an important pilgrim place of the Hindus and one of the seven sacred cities in India. The main pilgrim center in Mathura is the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple. Mathura is also an important craft center. The city is known for its many temples dedicated to the Lord Krishna located at Katra, Keshav Deo, the temples are visited by pilgrims from all over the world.
Mathura is located on the western banks of River Yamuna and was formerly a hub of rich culture and civilization. The Krishna Janmabhoomi temple is the most important attraction of the town. The city has its own charm and grandeur that gets manifested through its magnificent architecture.
The couple Devaki and Vasudeva was imprisoned in Mathura by the evil king Kansa. Krishna was born to them in the prison. The eighth child of Devaki was destined to kill Kansa, managed to kill all children. But not Krishna, the eighth child escaped. The doors of the prison magically opened and the guards fell asleep, when Krishna was born. Vasudeva then took Krishna across the Yamuna River to Gokul to be cared for by his foster parents, Nand and Yasoda in Vrindavan. When Krishna and Balarama were older, they were invited to Mathura, where Kansa was planning their deaths. Krishna killed Kansa.
Mathura became the capital of the Shursen republic in the 6th century BC. Mathura Art and cluture reached highest position under the Kushan dynasty.
Tourism is still in a development stage in the city. There are quite a few places to visit in Mathura and its surroundings, most of them linked to the Hindu theology. Vishram Ghat central of 25 ghats is the main Ghat in Mathura. After the Vadh of Kansa Shri Krishna and Balram rested here so it is called SHREE VISHRAM GHAT.
