| The Birth Place of "Kancharla Gopanna,
"popularly known as "Bhakta Ramadas". The old Residence of Bhakta Ramadas was
named as "Bhakta Ramadas Dhyana Mandir". Nelakondapally is a historic site
encompassed by a mud fortification wall covering nearly 100 acres. |

| Excavations have unearthed foundations of brick
built Viharas, wells, cisterns, a Mahastupa, terracotta figurines, a bronze idol
of :Buddha, a miniature Stupa carved in limestone and other early historic
materials belonging to 3rd and 4th centuries A.D. According to a myth, the
Pandavas spent a year of Agnata Vasa here after their twelve years in exile,
working incognito in the palace of Virata Raju the king of Virata Nagaram. |

| To capitalise on the tourism potential of the
famous Nelakondapalli Buddhist stupa, the second biggest one in South India
steps initiated the State Government. |

A tourist package beginning from Hyderabad to Phanigiri in Suryapet, Nelakondapalli, Jaggaiahpet, Amaravathi,
Nagarjunakonda and back to Hyderabad is on the anvil.Proposal are in the
pipeline to include it in the Buddhist circuit, besides modernising the stupa. |

According to Archaelogical Survey of India officials during Ikshvaka dynasty in 3rd century, the Nelakondapalli
Buddhist stupa was constructed and it stood 100 foot tall when it was built. It
has been reduced to 35 foot only. to restore the dilapidated Vihar complex
efforts are now on, which is adjacent to the stupa. Rs 50 lakh for this purpose
sanctioned by the Archaelogy department. |
