DURGAM CHERUVU
One such beautiful location- Durgam Cheruvu (Secret Lake) belonging to much older times. This lake once served as a drinking water source to the Golconda Fort. The lake brinks on the lush green terrains of the Jubilee Hills.
The Durgam Cheruvu is popularly called as the Madhapur Lake, the Lake is endowed with rich scenic beauty and is set amid hillocks that rise majestically on either side.
Rich scenic surroundings and the picturesque lake waters made this become a major tourist attraction.
Pedal boating, camping, and trekking facilities are available. A cafeteria as well as a refreshment center are located on its banks. Granite shields around here are one of its kind in Asia. The shields of granite rocks around here are said to be only one of its kind in entire Asia that date back to more than 2,500 million years and attract nature and rock lovers from all over.
Once the bund was fenced to stop encroachments, the next task was to conserve rocks and highlight their beauty with soft illumination that brought out the rugged beauty of rocks.
Then landscaping of the entire area was incorporated in the scheme and an area of 23 acres, 21 acres in Sheikpet village and two acres in Madhapur village, was acquired three years ago.
The Lake has been developed as a major tourist attraction in the Hyderabad city by the AP Tourism Department. The Department has provided pedal boating, camping and trekking facilities. A cafeteria and refreshment center are also located on the banks of the Lake.
The pristine lake is today fast turning into an eyesore with illegal constructions jutting out on all sides, one bang on the lake bed itself, and visitors thronging the place like never before. Hordes of them, trampling upon its tranquility.
Boating is organized here by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department. Angling is also possible at Durgam Cheruvu. A cafeteria and refreshment center is located on the banks of the lake.
